Hello friends! Before I share my moon-thly favorites, I have a few “housekeeping” updates…

Alright, now on to the goodies…

What I’m reading

Instead of my usual reading recommendations, my most recent #spellbooksaturday post was a query on a common reader’s dilemma: Will you quit reading a book, and why or why not? And recently, I read and enjoyed:

“This Cold Winter, Love Is a Superpower” by Rebecca Solnit
“Empathy is itself an act of imagination, that begins with attention and care: what is it like to be this other being, what are they feeling, what do they need. It arises from and reinforces a sense of non-separation, a sense that we’re all in this together, that everyone is your neighbor and no one is a stranger.”

“If every American did 3 of these 5 things, ICE would be stopped in its tracks.” by Leona Waller
Action items for the resistance.

And, because I need the reminder sometimes…

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

“Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver

What I’m doing

Honestly, friends, this week was rough— between ICE murdering people on the streets and in detention facilities (source), and the realities of winter weather in a very rural area (we’ve had wind chills ranging from 0ºF to -25ºF), I struggled to even put together a newsletter this week. I’m reminding myself that sometimes survival is the goal, and that I don’t need to always be productive, that I “do not have to be good.” Instead, I am giving myself a bit of grace— taking time to sit with a cup of tea, to enjoy a hobby that I have no intention of monetizing, nurturing myself daily in small and necessary ways. I hope you are, too. 🖤
