DIY Apothecary: Fire Cider

DIY Apothecary: Fire Cider

The winter months will be here before we know it, and with cold season on the horizon, I’m starting my fire cider so that it’s ready when I need it! Fire cider is a traditional herbal remedy, often made with a variety of warming and immune-boosting ingredients. It’s a vinegar-based tonic that is used to help fight off colds and support your immune system.* Here’s a classic recipe that can be adjusted to suit your tastes!

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 13 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh ginger root, grated
  • 1/4 cup fresh horseradish root, grated
  • 2 fresh jalapeños, chopped (or other hot peppers)
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary (or 1 tablespoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon ground turmeric (or 2 tablespoons fresh turmeric root)
  • 1 tablespoon black peppercorns, crushed
  • 1/4 cup raw honey (or to taste)
  • Apple cider vinegar (enough to fill the jar)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients: Place all the ingredients except for the honey and apple cider vinegar in a large jar. Ensure that all ingredients are chopped or grated finely to release their full potency.
  • Fill with Vinegar: Pour apple cider vinegar into the jar until it covers all the ingredients completely. Leave about an inch of space at the top. Use a piece of wax paper or parchment under the lid to prevent corrosion if you’re using a metal lid.
  • Shake & Steep: Seal the jar and shake well. Let the mixture steep in a cool, dark place for 2 to 4 weeks. Shake the jar daily to help mix and infuse the ingredients.
  • Strain & Sweeten: After 2-4 weeks, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth or fine strainer into a clean jar. Discard the solids. Stir in honey to taste.
  • Store: Fire cider can be stored in the fridge for up to 6 months or even longer, thanks to the preservative nature of apple cider vinegar and honey. The vinegar acts as a natural preservative, helping to extend its shelf life. If the taste, smell, or appearance changes drastically, or if you see mold, discard it.

How to Use

  • Take 1 tablespoon daily as a preventative measure or 1 tablespoon every few hours when feeling under the weather.
  • It can also be used as a salad dressing or a zesty addition to marinades!
