This week’s #spellbooksaturday has a bit of a twist, in celebration of Banned Books Week!
“…like witch hunts, book banning seeks to destroy and diminish that which doesn’t fall within a myopic worldview….”
a 2023 #spellbooksaturday that still feels relevant
This year Banned Books Week runs October 5th through 11th, culminating in Let Freedom Read Day, a day of action. LFRD offers great action items categorized by time constraints— for example, if you have 5 minutes you can call a representative, if you have 15 minutes you can check a banned book out of the library, if you have more than an hour you can volunteer with your local library, etc.

Similarly, the American Library Association also shares ways to fight censorship, Unite Against Book Bans offers this fabulous toolkit, and for my fellow New Yorkers, Free For All gives tips on how to “defend intellectual freedom in your community.”
Looking to read some banned titles? Check out the ALA’s list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books, or host a “Right to Read” night!
Those who ban books have never been on the right side of history. Persevere, dear readers, and stay magic. 🖤
