Spellbook Saturday: On Joining the DNF Club

This week’s #spellbooksaturday is going to be a bit different in content than my previous reading recommendations, as it’s more of a query— I’m feeling a bit curious today!

There are some truly polarized views on whether or not it’s acceptable to not finish a book. I’ve heard arguments that it’s disrespectful to the author, you can’t adequately critique the work, etc., to not finish a book, and from the other side I’ve heard passionate pleas to just live your life, there are so many other great books out there, why waste one’s time?

I have to admit, for the longest time I fell into the first camp, but in the past year or so I’ve converted. Having recently given up on a very popular novel that I just could not enjoy, I was curious… will you give up on a book, and if so, what makes you put down a book? Content? Writing style? Critique of the author? Something else?

If you are of the “I must finish!” category… what is your reasoning?

Either way, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Share in the comments!

I have a Bookshop.org list of #spellbooksaturday features for folks to peruse, but in the spirit of transparency as a Bookshop.org affiliate, I receive a small percentage of book sales purchased through my links. If you find that off-putting, feel free to shop directly through bookshop.org or your own local bookseller! My only goal here is to resist Amazon and the mega-rich.
