Hello friends! Autumn has arrived, and I am loving the cooler days… and the start of spooky season! This year I promised Garun that I would wait until the second week of September to begin decorating for Halloween (apparently August is “too early” for some people?!), and I committed to the promise, though I have since been decorating with aplomb— I lovelovelove this time of year, the season of the witch indeed. Plus, autumn is exceptionally beautiful in CNY— especially here at Hedge Witch Farms!

What I’m doing
I had a very disappointing occurrence in my beekeeping at the beginning of September, when we had a few hives swarm and leave. I have my theories about why this happened, and have spoken to other beekeepers both online and through my regional club, but regardless of why, it felt like a huge setback. Honestly, I cried. I’m not sharing this to garner sympathy, but for transparency— I think one of the issues with how folks can present themselves online is that we tend to highlight our successes (understandably, as vulnerability is hard), not showing all the mistakes, failures, and learning experiences that happen along the way. I’m trying to see everything that has happened on the farm this year as a learning experience, and gosh, have I learned a lot! And I am grateful that I have the opportunity to continue learning and sharing with you all…
