My partner and I enjoy researching for and daydreaming about our future “forever home” and occasionally send each other video tutorials on things like how to build a chicken coop, or best-practices for healthy permaculture. I recently stumbled across this gem circa 1942 from BFI on “Hedging,” a practice still employed by some today, and as I brainstorm future Tending the Hedge features, I thought I’d share a more literal interpretation of the series here today…
“A Northamptonshire hedger is ably assisted by a smiling land girl eager to learn the rural craft of hedge making and maintenance in this gentle instructional film, made by the Realist Film Unit for the Ministry of Agriculture.”
While certainly dated, I found the film interesting— the process is engrossing, and I can only agree with one commenter: “That hedger’s easy looking style belies his skill and the razor sharp edge on his billhook!”
What is a practical skill you’d like to learn or develop?
