Hedge Witch Farms is Reducing & Eliminating Plastics

It feels everywhere we look, we are confronted with the negative effects of consumerism, from environmental to social, psychological to physiological. One that has quite literally become internalized? Plastic.

Whether ingested through our food, the liquids we drink, or absorbed from the air we breathe, microplastics have become ubiquitous. They have been found in bodily fluids from saliva and blood to sputum and breast milk, along with an array of organs including the liver, kidneys, spleen, brain and even the insides of our bones.

Microplastics in the blood vessels have raised concerns, which include increased risk of heart attack, strokes, inflammation, and blood clotting. The chemicals in microplastics have been linked to various health issues, including cancer, immune system damage, reproductive problems, and developmental delays.

I don’t claim to be a medical professional nor an environmental scientist, and I don’t wish to fear-monger, but the information before us is chilling, and I think it’s important to do what we are able to minimize our exposure and our impact.

That’s one of the many reasons Hedge Witch Botanicals and Hedge Witch Farms are working to reduce and eliminate plastics in both our products and our operations. On the farm we’re working with environmentalist professionals to determine best practices for a plastic-free future, and looking to fellow farmers for tips— check out this great video on “Building DIY wood seed trays for plastic-free (easier!) seed starting” that has us excited for spring planting!

Most recently, I have replaced the plastic spray bottles previously used for Hex and Selkie with amber glass (the spray atomizer is still plastic, it’s proven nearly impossible to find a non-plastic atomizer!), at no cost to our customers. (Plus, I have to say, even the feel of the glass in my hand is a little improvement in my morning skincare ritual!) Folks will be able to find these updated products at the Fall Fair & Pie Walk in Hamilton tomorrow, 4 October, and all orders of Hex and/or Selkie placed online going forward will arrive in the glass containers.

While I understand that individual actions are a drop in the bucket compared to the global policies we need to enact (ie, “The US military emits more than entire industrialised nations like Portugal and Denmark,” per a 2023 report), I feel it’s important to make changes where we are able, as every little bit helps!

With gratitude & magic—
