This week’s #spellbooksaturday continues my horror streak with a solidly enjoyable adventure novel.
Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas

As the daughter of a rancher in 1840s Mexico, Nena knows a thing or two about monsters—her home has long been threatened by tensions with Anglo settlers from the north. This is the second book I’ve read by Cañas, the first being The Possession of Alba Díaz, and though I am not typically a fan of the Western genre, I found El Norte to be the stronger piece of work. Blending Mexican history, Western adventure stories, and vampire lore, the story is propulsive, and I enjoyed the balancing narratives of the two main characters.
