Hello friends! It’s time for another feature in the Tending the Hedge collection, a series that highlights inspiring individuals engaging in a practice of “magical stewardship,” living and working with intention, exploring themes of mutual aid and rejecting a mindset of competition and scarcity culture. Inspired by the myriad ways in which folks are tending the hedges of their own communities, so to speak, we talked about things like sustainability and stewardship, body positivity and social activism, spirituality and disability awareness, and staying true to oneself in a world that is full of “should’s.” (I am really in awe of the community and conversation that developed through this series, and recommend all new readers take a peek at the collection.)

This week I was lucky enough to chat with the absolutely magical Calan Ma’lyn, Operations and Community Manager of Broccoli Magazine. “Broccoli encourages the discovery and intelligent appreciation of cannabis through experimental and engaging explorations of art, culture, and fashion. Created by an all-women team and a wide network of contributors, Broccoli’s magazine, podcast and industry newsletter connect a global community ready to participate in a new era of weed.”

Indeed, following New York’s recent moves to legalize recreational cannabis use— becoming the 15th state to do so— it does feel that we are living in a new era. As a longtime user for both medicinal and recreational purposes, I am so inspired by the team at Broccoli for initating such important dialogues around topics like de-stigmatization, cultural appropriation in the weed world, etc., and might I add that they’re doing it in a gloriously beautiful manner? Seriously, the art direction in this magazine is… ::chef’s kiss::!

Read on for my interview with Calan, and have an absolutely ~magical~ 4/20, friends!

Calan Ma’lyn, Leo Canna-Queen

What are your pronouns and what is your sign?

She/Her, Leo.

Are you a witch? If so, what does that word mean to you?

I’m everything, and sometimes I do embody a witch. To me, a witch intentionally works with the energies around us, bending, molding, and reshaping via the elements in order to do their will or the will of the divine.

What drew you to your work? Why is it important?

The plant, cannabis, helped me remember who I am and help lead those around me to remember themselves without pain, fear, stress, and other hang-ups of the mind that we can get stuck in. It’s important because at our core we all are creative beings just looking to create or enjoy others’ creativity.

How can others engage with this work and tend the hedge in their own communities?

By enjoying what you do every day. I’m grateful and proud to work with a team of other Women creating behind Broccoli Magazine and I’ve arrived here by showing my ready-to-grow self in the community. Be yourself and show others who you are, then the work will follow.
