Spellbook Saturday: 2024 Favorites

Though we have a few weeks of reading left in the year in which there could be a surprise contender, this week’s #spellbooksaturday is a roundup of my top reads in 2024. Feeling salty? Be sure to check out my 2024 Fails as well!

📚 Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution by R. F. Kuang
A riveting historical fantasy that delves into the power dynamics embedded within language and translation. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ [Spellbook Saturday feature available here.]

📚 Kindred by Octavia Butler
A gripping blend of science fiction and historical fiction, where a young Black woman from 1970s California is repeatedly transported back in time to the antebellum South to ensure her own ancestry while confronting the horrors of slavery. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ [Spellbook Saturday feature available here.]

📚 Women Talking by Miriam Toews
I neglected to do a Spellbook Saturday feature when I read this one way back in January, but my gosh, it is powerful. (I also highly recommend the movie adaptation!) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

📚 The Future by Naomi Alderman
This was one of those books I couldn’t stop talking about, an incredible follow-up to The Power. ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ [Spellbook Saturday feature available here.]

📚 Tied for 5th place: Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (review) and The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo (review), both ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ and well-worth reading!
