Hello friends! Spring has been an absolute whirlwind on Hedge Witch Farms. I have been busy preparing for our bees, taking an intermediate beekeeping course and getting everything ready for our new colonies. We are striving to be plastic-free on the farm, and that means painting new hive boxes with non-toxic milk paint and wiring all the frames for beeswax foundations. I have heard other beekeepers bemoan the extra labor, but I hope that this reduces our carbon footprint, and better nourishes our bees. Also this spring, we have planted over 50 sapling trees, including a hedge of fir trees and a small orchard of apple, plum, and cherry trees. Garun and I were both sore and exhausted by the end of our day, though my Helios muscle rub definitely helped with the former, and the sense of accomplishment was rewarding. I’ve also been gearing up for the start of farmer’s market season (check out the events page for where to find me)! I have made so much soap over the past couple months, I’m really quite pleased, and I hope to see local friends… and make a few new ones, hopefully!
After all the hustle and bustle this month, in my downtime I have enjoyed…
What I’m reading
I recently read Educated and I have a new #spellbooksaturday coming out on May 2nd, plus this month I (had a lot of feminist rage and) appreciated the following…
“It’s Not Only The Violence: Women are Enraged by Men’s Cultivated Ignorance” by Soraya Chemaly
“Whether protecting an illusion of safety or an illusion of control, the result is the same: the deliberate silencing of women to maintain a challenged status quo.”
“Sir, This Is a Bus: A Brief History of Male Entitlement in Public” by Professor Meredith
“Power survives not only in institutions, but in ordinary performances. In the thousand tiny moments where one person’s ego is allowed to become everyone else’s problem.” (Oh my gosh, who hasn’t experienced this?!)
What I’m watching
I really appreciate Adam Haritan’s educational videos, and his desire to connect individuals with their own environments…

What I’m listening to
I’ve really been enjoying this series of interviews with The Cunning Farmer—though I have yet to order his book, it sounds like it’s right up my alley!
I’ve long been fascinated by the myth of Cassandra, and this podcast provided a different perspective for me.
What I’m doing
We recently had a 6+ hour drive, and you can be sure I popped a few Plan C stickers in every public restroom I used during our trip! (I also suspect I am not a great road-trip companion, as I inevitably fall asleep on long drives, but Garun doesn’t yet seem to mind.)
